Palaestral

A roster for the studio, a page for each teacher.

Palaestral is booking, payments and client-record software for an independent instructor who sells their own time — surf, yoga, running, strength. Run a place others teach at, or teach at somebody else's. The studio holds the roster and keeps a share of what each seat sells; whoever teaches keeps their own page, their own Stripe account and their own records.

A studio's roster, as its owner sees it

Roster 4 seats

  • Sample Coach owner teaches surf, yoga, running and strength · sets the terms the studio keeps nothing
  • Sample Yoga instructor teaches yoga the studio keeps 20% $4.40 of each $22.00 yoga seat
  • Sample Running instructor teaches running the studio keeps 15% asked to keep 20%, waiting on Sample Running $3.00 of each $20.00 running seat
  • Eli Example manager runs check-in and the register teaches nothing
Each seat's cut
The owner sets what the studio keeps of each person's sales, seat by seat. It comes out of the payment, never on top of it.
A higher cut
A raise waits until the person it comes out of accepts it. A lower cut applies at once, and neither reaches a sale already made.
The front desk
A manager runs check-in and the register, and is shown nobody's cut. A seat that teaches nothing has no page and sells nothing.

Sample data. Not a real instructor or client.

A roster, three roles

A studio is a place on Palaestral with a roster. Its owner invites the people who teach there and the people who run the desk, and each holds a seat as an owner, a manager or an instructor.

An owner sets the terms: who is on the roster, what the studio keeps of each seat, and the studio's own page. A manager runs the front desk, with the day's schedule, check-in and the register, and sets no terms. An instructor teaches, and sees their own lessons and clients and nobody else's.

The cut, seat by seat

What the studio keeps is set for each seat, as a share of what that person sells there. It is taken from the payment the client makes, so nothing is added to their price.

A lower cut applies at once. A higher one waits until the person it comes out of accepts it. Either reaches only what is sold after it, never a sale already made, and a studio keeps nothing until it has connected a Stripe payout account of its own.

Whoever teaches stays the merchant: a client pays them, through Stripe, into their own Stripe account. The studio's share is taken from that payment and paid on to the studio: a lesson's once it has been taught, and a pack's or a membership month's 14 days after it is paid for.

Stripe pays the studio's account out once a month. A refund takes the studio's share back, from its Stripe balance as far as that covers it and from the shares it is owed next after that, and while a studio owes, it is paid nothing new.

What a studio never sees

Your notes about a client, your lesson plans and your payment records are yours. A studio you teach at sees its own schedule and who is booked into it, and none of those.

Nor is it shown what Palaestral charges you, anything you sell at other places, or who holds a membership with you.

One of you, at every place

You are one person on Palaestral wherever you teach: one page, one Stripe account, and a seat at each place. Your page lists what you teach at every place, and nothing can book you into two places at once.

A studio can have a page of its own, listing where it teaches and who teaches there, and each lesson taught there names it on your page. A studio sells nothing itself: every lesson is booked on the page of the person who teaches it. Holding seats at two places, you switch between them from the console's header.

What stays with you

  • Your page, its name and your own Stripe account, at every place you teach.
  • Your notes, lesson plans and payment records, which no studio reads.
  • The cut each sale was made at, fixed on it, so a later change never reaches it.

  • Getting paid

Payments go to your own Stripe account, Stripe bills its processing to you, and a refund comes out of your balance on the terms the booking was sold under.

  • Cancellation terms

How much comes back when a client cancels, when you call a lesson off, or when conditions do: the terms you set, copied onto each booking when it is sold.

  • Packs, memberships and weekly places

Three ways to sell more than one lesson: a pack of lessons used as they are booked, a membership charged monthly, and a weekly place kept until it ends.
